Technology

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are providing remote small group sessions. We use video conferencing technology to create secure, face to face opportunities for students to talk with one another. We use digital whiteboard technology to create shared workspaces for students to collaboratively solve problems and share their thinking in real time. As a small collaborative learning setting, we use technology strategically so that students can work together and be actively involved while staying safe.

Who Ate My Cake?

To find how much was owed to the cake’s owner, this fourth grader’s strategy was to find the cost of one slice and then multiply that by the number of slices eaten.

She used drawing tools to cut the cake into equal portions. She then reasoned that if 8 slices cost $6.50, then 4 slices would cost $3.25. That would mean that one slice would cost about $0.80. To find how much was owed, she added the cost of 4 slices and 1 slice, $3.25 + $0.80 = $4.05

The other students in the session solved the problem dfferently which led to a rich discussion.
